Shower doors are almost always tempered glass, and a crack in tempered glass can sometimes lead to the whole pane shattering into small pieces without warning, since tempered glass fails all at once rather than holding a slow crack. It depends on the door type, but generally yes, more than a cracked window. A cracked shower door or sliding door panel is under more everyday stress, contact, temperature swings, opening and closing, than a fixed window pane, and tempered glass with a crack can fail suddenly rather than gradually.
Can a cracked shower door be repaired instead of replaced?
No, not the glass itself. Tempered glass, which is what nearly all shower doors use, can't be repaired the way a crack in a car windshield sometimes can. Once it's cracked or chipped in a way that compromises the tempering, the panel gets replaced.
Why did my glass door crack with no obvious impact?
